Vaalwater (now Mabatlane) , situated in the upper reaches of the Mokolo River, is the central village within the Waterberg Savannah Biosphere Reserve (mountain range) in the western part of the Limpopo Province. It is best known for its beef, game (also Big 5) and holiday farms, offering hunting (green, bow, rifle, camera), game and sight seeing, hiking, birding and horse trails.

 

The district is malaria free, experiencing dry, moderate winters and hot summers with spactacular thunder storms.

 

Things to do and see include the Anglican Church building at 24 Rivers which was designed by Sir Herbert Baker and made of local materials, the Rhino Museum devoted entirely to the conservation of the rhino, the Waterberg Museum housed in the original Melkriver School buildings, elephant rides at Rock Lodge, experiencing the San at Safarilands, learning about white lions at Mama Tau and visiting and tasting the award winning goat cheeses and their caretakers on their farm.
